Of Mice and Trout

I had a few hours to fish today and decided to throw mouse-like patterns on the East River. I was curious to see if I could find some big fish on mice during the daytime. I caught several nice trout, including this fat 21-inch cutbow which came up from the…

Memphis Time

Lytle and Margaret were still on Memphis time today, but that didn’t prevent them from jumping in the Taylor River and chasing big trout. They both did great out there. It was a fun day with good fishing and good company.

The Swirl

We fished mostly hoppers, caddis, and BWOs today, with a few nymphs mixed in. The fish attacked the hoppers at times, but we saw some cautious swirls on our flies today, especially late in the day when they were eating caddis. Hall got this nice brown here when the fish…

The PMD Hatch

I had a few hours this afternoon to fish the Taylor River C&R and try to hit the PMD hatch with my bamboo rod. The fish are fussier than ever now, and I missed a lot of fish. But I also landed quite a few nice browns like this one…

Hoppers and Caddis

August is here and that means hoppers. Plack and his sons, Jake and Trem, did well today throwing hoppers and caddis in the riffles and on the banks. Some of the fish didn’t make it easy for the young men, but they still got some nice fish to the net.…

Fun Day on the Taylor River

Had a really fun day on the Taylor River today with Peri and Virginia. They both caught some really nice fish on both nymph rigs and dry flies. We got browns, rainbows, and also a brookie and a cutthroat. Great job ladies!

Day Off

I had a day off today, so I headed up to the Taylor River C&R to fish the mayfly hatches. I got some nice fish, but they certainly made me work for it.

Big Water

We had to deal with some pretty big water today after a couple of days of rain in the mountains, but the guys did well and landed some good fish. We fished streamers, nymph rigs, and hopper-dropper rigs and worked the river pretty hard. It paid off for Hanes with…

Fussy Fish

We really went through the fly box today working on some VERY fussy fish up in some nice ponds in Taylor Park. Julie, Chloe and Sophie managed to hook a few fish, and Chloe got this nice rainbow to the net.

Enjoying Retirement!

Peter and Dick came up from New Mexico to fish a couple of days with me this weekend. We fished the Taylor and Gunnison rivers and saw some good hatches and lots of fish. The guys did great and caught a lot of really nice wild fish, like this nice…
