The Gunnison River has dropped and cleared, and it is fishing very well. The main hatches should kick in soon and we’ll see some great dry fly action. We had to nymph yesterday down on the lower Gunnison, but we got some nice fish including this 18.5 inch brown here.
It was a good day for dry fly fishing on the Taylor River C&R stretch today. Fished the mole fly nearly the entire time. Caught several good fish, including this really nice cutthroat.
Dave and I fished the high country up at nearly 11,000 feet for cutthroat yesterday. The small creek contains 100% cutthroat. These Colorado Cutthroat are our native trout and are a lot of fun to chase with a fly rod.
Some of our small creeks hold a lot of brook trout. This time of year, they will chase just about anything. Though certainly not a native fish here out west, they are a lot of fun to catch, especially on a bamboo rod.
This is such a great time to get up in the mountains and fish small creeks. And you just never know what you’ll run into.
