Cameron had a fun day on the Taylor River learning how to fly fish. He did a great job landing this chunky rainbow!

Gunnison River

The Gunnison River has dropped and cleared, and it is fishing very well. The main hatches should kick in soon and we’ll see some great dry fly action. We had to nymph yesterday down on the lower Gunnison, but we got some nice fish including this 18.5 inch brown here.

Taylor River C&R

It was a good day for dry fly fishing on the Taylor River C&R stretch today. Fished the mole fly nearly the entire time. Caught several good fish, including this really nice cutthroat.

High Country Cutthroat

Dave and I fished the high country up at nearly 11,000 feet for cutthroat yesterday. The small creek contains 100% cutthroat. These Colorado Cutthroat are our native trout and are a lot of fun to chase with a fly rod.

Brook Trout

Some of our small creeks hold a lot of brook trout. This time of year, they will chase just about anything. Though certainly not a native fish here out west, they are a lot of fun to catch, especially on a bamboo rod.

High Country Cutthroat

The snow is melting and the big rivers are in run-off. This is a great time to fish small creeks with a short bamboo rod. And if you can get up into the high country, you just might find a cutthroat or two.

Rain, sleet, snow…and BWOs

The weather here in the Colorado Rockies during springtime can be very unpredictable. You just have to be ready for anything. Some cloud cover and rain is almost always a good thing for fishing. The Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs) tend to hatch in big numbers during this time, and it can…

Gunnison River Rainbow Trout

Another nice Gunnison River rainbow. A few more of these and I’ll forget all about the long cold winter…and 32 below zero and frozen pipes.

Small Creek Fishing

The big rivers are in run-off right now, so it’s a great time to fish the small creeks. I’ve been fishing a 7-foot bamboo rod and throwing small streamers and wooly buggers. It’s been great fun! This nice brown here had such amazing color for this time of year, I…
