Dry Fly Fishing and Bamboo

Will had a great time fishing his nice custom bamboo rods and throwing big dry flies at hungry trout here for a few days. I took his daughters, Zara and Wynn, out fishing as well. See Wynn’s photo below. It was a fun week with the family!

East River

Wynn had some fun today on the East River at our lease on the East River Anglers Club. At 9 years-old, she was roll casting, mending line, and hitting fish like a seasoned angler. It was a great day!

Taylor River at Crystal Creek

I recently taught six new fly fishers over two days at Crystal Creek. They learned fast and were hooking fish as soon as we hit the water. Ellen had this fish on within her first few casts. Everyone caught fish and had a good time.

Gunnison River

The Gunnison River has dropped and cleared, and it is fishing very well. The main hatches should kick in soon and we’ll see some great dry fly action. We had to nymph yesterday down on the lower Gunnison, but we got some nice fish including this 18.5 inch brown here.

High Country Cutthroat

Dave and I fished the high country up at nearly 11,000 feetĀ for cutthroat yesterday. The small creek contains 100% cutthroat. These Colorado Cutthroat are our native trout and are a lot of fun to chase with a fly rod.

Brook Trout

Some of our small creeks hold a lot of brook trout. This time of year, they will chase just about anything. Though certainly not a native fish here out west, they are a lot of fun to catch, especially on a bamboo rod.

Springtime in the Rockies

This is such a great time to get up in the mountains and fish small creeks. And you just never know what you’ll run into.

High Country Cutthroat

The snow is melting and the big rivers are in run-off. This is a great time to fish small creeks with a short bamboo rod. And if you can get up into the high country, you just might find a cutthroat or two.
