More from the Gunnison River

The Gunnison River is fishing really well right now. I fished yesterday afternoon thinking it would warm up, but it never did. I was cracking ice off my guides the entire time. It was cold and overcast, and the fishing was excellent.

Spring on the way?

More evidence that we might actually have a spring season in the Gunnison Valley. We’ve had some single digit mornings recently, but with the sunshine and warm afternoons (mid to upper 30s), we’re seeing more ice come off the rivers. You need to be careful out there and watch for…

Gunnison River

The ice has come off on several sections of the Gunnison River and there is water to fish. We should see some good fishing from now until run-off.

Fish On

I’ve been fishing a typical tandem rig for this time of year for the past couple of weeks now. Here is an underwater shot of a pretty cutbow that took the egg pattern (Trout Bead). A big stonefly nymph (Pickle Fly) has been working well too, along with small midge…

Ice-Off

It’s been warming up and the rivers are starting to open up in places, like this section of the Gunnison River up near Almont. We still have a lot of winter left, but it was nice to be able to get out on the Gunnison for a couple of hours…

Frozen rod, reel, and fingers

It was cold, windy, and snowing off and on, but I finally had the river to myself. And I got a couple of nice fish today, including a good brown and nice 22-inch rainbow. So it was worth the trip, even though I couldn’t feel my fingers.

Rainbow Trout

A very nice 18-inch rainbow trout caught on a size 20 red midge today. Not such a great photo, but a good fish.

More Tales from the Tailwater

A couple of photos from the Taylor River C&R section this week: The first one shows a nice rainbow during the release. The second photo shows the amazing colors the trout have up there below the dam.

Love is a Battlefield!

I landed this brown trout up at the Taylor River C&R yesterday. It was a nice chunky 18-inch fish, still showing signs of battle, probably from the spawn last fall. It looked like one of his buddies took a small chunk out of his Adipose fin, which is still on…

Taylor River C&R

I fished the Taylor River C&R stretch yesterday afternoon from about 1:30 PM until 5 PM. It was cold and snowing off and on, but the fishing was excellent. I can’t remember ever catching that many fish in January. It would have been an awesome day for summer. I caught…
